Academic Background

Mr Shah graduated from St. George's Hospital Medical School (London University) during which he also obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Biomedical Sciences. He then obtained his specialist ophthalmic training in the London Teaching Hospitals (St. Thomas' Hospital, St. Georges Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, The Royal London Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital).During his training he also undertook a research fellowship at St. Thomas' Hospital where he conducted research into cataract surgery and ocular inflammation and was awarded the Southern Ophthalmological Society Prize Medal for this work. He then undertook further sub-specialist training as a Glaucoma Fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He was also awarded a King's Fund Scholarship for a fellowship to visit ophthalmic centres in the USA (Universities of San Francisco and Los Angeles) to gain further sub-specialist experience.He was initially appointed as a Consultant at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and the Royal London Hospital in 1997 where he became Lead Clinician in Ophthalmology for both Audit and Research and Development. He then moved to his Consultant post at Epsom and St. Helier NHS Trust where he subsequently became Ophthalmology College Tutor, an Educational Supervisor and Lead Clinician for ophthalmology.
