Mr Martin Bircher - Orthopaedics

Mr Martin Bircher is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Surrey who specialises in hip, knee and foot surgery.

Clinical interests

General orthopaedics, trauma, pelvic and acetabular fractures/surgery, lower limb, hip and knee replacements plus foot surgery.

General orthopaedics and trauma. Mr Bircher's main areas of special interest include hip replacement surgery, lower limb arthroplasty, ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic knee surgery (sports injuries), foot surgery including correction of bunions, metatarsal osteotomy and toe straightening. 

A particular interest of Mr Bircher is pelvic and acetabular surgery and he spent a year on a Fellowship at Sunnybrook Medical Centre, Toronto with Professor Tile and Dr Schatzker where this interest developed. He brought his expertise back to the UK and established one of the first units at Epsom which then transferred in 1992 to St George’s where he heads up the Pelvic and Acetabular Trauma Unit. Mr Bircher now co-ordinates the pelvic and acetabular education programme in the UK and has run courses since 1999.

Mr Bircher holds three outpatient sessions at Ashtead Hospital per week and has two operating lists. In an emergency situation every effort will be made for a patient to be seen quickly and appointments can be made via his secretary or the Outpatient Department at Ashtead Hospital.  

Initial consultation fee will not exceed £220 and follow-up consultation fee will not exceed £150.

Academic background

Mr Bircher holds the position of Programme Director for the South West Thames Orthopaedic Training Scheme.  He has been on the Council of the British Orthopaedic Surgeons and is at present council member of the Royal College of Surgeons with a special portfolio dealing with medical education and is on the independent review committee.
