Shoulder Surgery
For all arthritic, traumatic and sports injuries of the
shoulder
When the
shoulder is working normally you really don’t notice it as it
quietly goes about its job of positioning the hand where it is
needed. However, when it becomes painful or stiff or wobbly then
you very quickly realise just how important it is. For decades the
poor old shoulder played second fiddle to its trendier cousins –
the hip and the knee – and patients didn’t really have much of a
choice of treatment and would be told that it would either get
better or to put up with it.
Thankfully, shoulder surgery has moved on a
long way in the last few years, and the combination of new methods
of diagnosis coupled with dramatic advances in surgical techniques
and equipment means that patients really don’t have to put up with
painful, stiff or unstable shoulders.
Many shoulder
conditions such as tendonitis, frozen shoulder or dislocations can
be dealt with arthroscopically which is less painful, causes less
scarring and is often technically easier to do. One of the biggest
improvements has been in shoulder replacement and many older
patients who previously had to suffer with pain and very limited
function can now have their arthritic joint replaced and get back
to normality.
It is a pleasure to be able to help patients get rid of their
pain, regain their function and return to a full satisfying life. I
have brought over a decade’s specialist experience as a shoulder
surgeon to the Ashtead Hospital Upper Limb Unit and we are going
from strength to strength.
